Working Area- Cage Idea

This idea was a new breakthrough from the idea of showing a photograph a sweatshop worker's working area and labelling the different layers with quotes like 'I sleep here', 'I eat here' etc. I figured I wouldn't be able to get a realistic photo of a sweatshop worker's area in time or at all so I began thinking of ways I could visually interpret this idea by using metaphors.

I listed a number of adjectives that would describe the working area/conditions for sweatshop workers and began thinking of sentences that could go with each of those words. In the end, I stuck with 'trapped' and the idea of 'a rabbit trapped in a cage'. From this I began scribbling down quick sketches of how I saw this metaphor working with my idea. I came up with a woman curled up in the corner of a cage surrounded by sweaters she had made. I then added a sewing machine on top of the cage to link the image back to sweatshop factories and also included a hamster cage connected to the machine, suggesting that the worker is using their full body strength to make these sweater.

I then saw this poster which contributed to how I composed the poster as a whole. The use of negative space also added to the loneliness and confinement of the worker.
