Grid- A structure that the designer works on, which disappears once the work is complete.
Layout- The arrangement of all the elements on the grid.
Differences:
1) The grid is the start and process of a piece of work whereas the layout is the finished product.
2) The grid is invisible whereas the layout is visible.
3) The grid is consistent whereas the layout is varied.
4) The grid is for the designer whereas the layout is for the reader.
We then began designing a few layouts ourselves on a given grid and from that we made up our own final layout on a double-page spread which we then combined with 4 others in a group. It's interesting how designing your own layout is one process and combining with other designer's layouts is a whole new process. It's crucial that all the layouts compliment each other, and the sequence in which it is put together is the upmost importance as well. I'm happy with how this mini project turned out, it was so exciting having to work to a deadline and I loved the teamwork aspect too.
The first layout shows a large image with limited text surrounding it, which explains the message of the whole article quickly and clearly. We then move onto the next few pages which has more text and smaller images which has all the important information in detail. The final page has limited text on it again with big images in comparison so it acts as a short conclusion. The large image at the bottom of the last layout reflects a full-stop and shows that the article has come to an end. Overall I feel that some of the pages are too overcrowded with text which may not be that legible for a reader; so I think that if this was to be done again, less text would be included and more negative space used to create visually attractive layouts.
We also laid out our own belongings on a double-page spread in each of our individual styles which may be used in our Promo-print project. Apparently, the way the objects are laid out reflects what sort of person you are. Interesting...I wonder what this says about me...
